In the midst of<\/span>\u00a0economic hardship for the working class and a climate emergency, the last place any usable good should go is a landfill. Donations are a great way to connect with your community, give back, and earn write<\/span>–<\/span>offs for your taxable income (although not every organization offers tax receipts). They also can extend the life of your purchases so that other people and the planet can both benefit as less refuse winds up in the ocean and underground. While this piece will focus on office supplies, you can also use a lot of these resources to find places that accept all sorts of donations or goods to recycle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Please note:<\/strong> While donations and recycling are great options, the BEST way to reduce waste is to REDUCE our consumption.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Donate\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

S<\/span><\/b>alvation Army<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>The good old\u00a0<\/span>Salvation Army<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can handle a variety of pickups for a range of good like furniture, appliances, and clothing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S<\/span><\/b>avers<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Savers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0partners with a range of non-profits (including some of the ones on this list) by paying them for the donated products and then selling them in their thrift stores. They accept books, electronics, small furniture and appliances, clothes and more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

H<\/span><\/b>abitat for Humanity<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Your local\u00a0<\/span>ReStore<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will happily take items that can be resold to raise funds for builds. This is a great option if you have leftover building materials after a renovation or build out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

H<\/span><\/b>uman IT<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Human IT<\/span><\/a>\u00a0accepts most electronics,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>office\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>warehouse equipment. They have a nationwide\u00a0<\/span>pick-up<\/span>\u00a0and delivery network and repair, refurbish, and repurpose all donations when necessary. They also provide discounted internet access and digital literacy training<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/span><\/b>omputers with Causes<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Computers with Causes<\/span><\/a>\u00a0allows you to donate computers, scanners, routers, and other electronics. They repair and refurbish the donations so that they can help their national network of organizations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span><\/b>ocal\u00a0<\/span><\/b>S<\/span><\/b>chools<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>You can\u00a0use\u00a0<\/span>this nifty resource<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to find schools in your area in need of supplies like pens, art supplies, or organizational materials.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

V<\/span><\/b>ietnam Veterans of America<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>You can support veterans across\u00a0<\/span>the US\u00a0<\/span>by donating your furniture and other supplies\u00a0<\/span>to the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Vietnam Veterans of America<\/span><\/a>. With networks in over 30 states, they can more likely than not pick up your items, too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span><\/b>he Freecycle Network<\/span><\/b>
\nYou can\u00a0<\/span>use<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Freecycle Network<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to offer up anything that may be of use to someone else. It\u2019s like a\u00a0<\/span>Craigslist<\/span>\u00a0where people can post what they need, you can post what you\u00a0<\/span>have to<\/span>\u00a0give, and make the connections to get these items redistributed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Donate by\u00a0Location<\/h3>\n

N<\/span><\/b>ew\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Y<\/span><\/b>ork<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Donate NYC<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is an online directory that will connect you with organizations that will accept anything you\u2019d like to\u00a0donate.\u00a0You can search by the kinds of items and see locations all around the city to select the cause you\u2019d like to support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S<\/span><\/b>an<\/span><\/b>\u00a0F<\/span><\/b>rancisco<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Scrap<\/span><\/a>\u00a0takes a variety of materials from textiles to office supplies and breathes new life into them through art, while financial donations support a range of creative programming.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span><\/b>os<\/span><\/b>\u00a0A<\/span><\/b>ngeles<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>LA Shares<\/span><\/a>\u00a0takes donated furniture and supplies from local businesses and redistributes them free of charge to local non-profits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/span><\/b>hicago<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>WasteShed<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Chicago has a similar mission to SF\u2019s Scrap, taking office supplies and art supplies and repurposing them for art projects. If they can\u2019t take what you\u00a0have to\u00a0give, they\u2019ll do their best to redirect you to an organization that can.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span><\/b>ashington<\/span><\/b>,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0DC<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Zero Waste DC<\/span><\/a>\u00a0provides a list of resources specific to the DC area for all your donation and recycling needs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

P<\/span><\/b>hiladelphia<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>The Career Wardrobe<\/span><\/a>\u00a0resells business attire at a discount<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so if you\u2019ve been looking for a place for your tired blazers to find new life, this is the place. They also may take office supplies from time to time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M<\/span><\/b>iami<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>In the Greater Miami area,\u00a0<\/span>Miami Rescue Mission<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will take all sorts of office supplies and other items either in their offices or to sell in their thrift stores. They serve the unhoused population in Miami and are an extremely kind group of people. (I dropped a few boxes of excess office supplies to them last year and it was so easy.)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span><\/b>oronto<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>I haven\u2019t forgotten about our Canada-based readers! The <\/span>Toronto Wildlife Centre<\/span><\/a>\u00a0accepts a range of office supplies and electronics. Specifics are in their\u00a0wishlist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span><\/b>ustin<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Another haven for the arts,\u00a0<\/span>Austin Creative Reuse<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will take most office supplies with some exceptions that are outlined on their website. They are currently accepting donations by appointment only.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

P<\/span><\/b>hoenix<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>AZ Central<\/span><\/a>\u00a0has a list of resources of places to donate your used goods in Phoenix. You can also give travel relief directly to the Navajo Nation through the\u00a0<\/span>Phoenix Indian Center<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D<\/span><\/b>evelop\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Africa<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Develop Africa<\/span><\/a>\u00a0helps 87 schools in Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leon, and Tanzania supply their classrooms with a range of supplies necessary for an effective classroom experience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

P<\/span><\/b>ens for Kids<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Founded in Switzerland,\u00a0<\/span>Pens for Kids<\/span><\/a>\u00a0coordinates the delivery of pens and other school supplies to their liaisons in Africa that distribute them to school<\/span>–<\/span>age children. You can send directly to Africa or to the coordination center in Switzerland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recycle\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Not everything is fit to be donated. If it can\u2019t be reused or donated, we can find ways to recycle these goods. Recycling doesn\u2019t have to be a hassle, either<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>if<\/span>\u00a0your office building or city doesn\u2019t have a way to recycle paper, you can hire some outside help. Plenty of companies offer bulk recycling for larger corporations that produce a lot of paper waste. Here are some other options for your recycling search.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Earth 911<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>You can use a nifty search tool like\u00a0<\/span>Earth 911<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to find places where you can recycle everything from paper to batteries and everything in between. Many of these places will offer pick up services for a large enough load.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TerraCycle<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>TerraCycle<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is an amazing resource for finding free, national recycling programs for a range of hard<\/span>-t<\/span>o<\/span>–<\/span>recycle products. From toothpaste and coffee pods to station<\/span>e<\/span>ry and Solo cups, you can find a program for almost anything you\u2019d prefer to recycle instead of\u00a0throw\u00a0away.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recycle by\u00a0<\/span><\/b>City<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>If you\u2019re located in\u00a0<\/span>Austin, Chi<\/span>cago<\/span>, Flagstaff, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sedona or<\/span>\u00a0West Hollywood<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Recycle by City<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can help you find the right facilities to recycle all sorts of supplies and goods.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
