Even the\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>even\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>warfs\u00a0<\/span>factor into this discussion. As they march in unison, they\u00a0<\/span>hum \u201cheigh ho, heigh ho, it\u2019s off to work we go\u201d in the 1937 animated Disney film\u00a0<\/span>Snow White<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rocking the Bay Area sound,\u00a0<\/span>frontman<\/span>\u00a0Huey Lewis and company croon about the rigors of certain occupations. The band does this in clever tongue-and-cheek style. \u201cSomedays won\u2019t end ever\/And somedays pass on by\/I\u2019ll be working here forever\/At least until I die.” The daily routine for this job segment is a grind<\/span>, yet it\u00a0<\/span>provides barely enough money for rent and car payments. \u201cI get a check on\u00a0<\/span>Friday,<\/span>\u00a0but it\u2019s already spent.\u201d That\u2019s why \u201cI\u2019m taking what they\u00a0<\/span>giving<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018cause<\/span>\u00a0I\u2019m working for a\u00a0<\/span>livin<\/span>\u2019.\u201d Lewis wrote the song based on his experience as a truck driver before becoming a musician. He held some of the other jobs mentioned, namely busboy and bartender. These stints motivated him to create this \u201c<\/span>tribute<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to the working man\u201d and woman. In this case, an encounter with an exhausted restroom attendant at Chasen\u2019s restaurant in Los Angeles served as the springboard for Donna Summer to co-write this song. It tells the story of a woman<\/span>, a\u00a0<\/span>blue-collar<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>worker,\u00a0<\/span>who \u201c<\/span>works hard for the money.\u201d Summer credits the role model, Onetta Johnson, in the lyrics. \u201cOnetta there in the corner stand\/And she wonders where she is\/And it\u2019s strange to her\/Some people seem to have everything.\u201d This tune <\/span>skyrocketed\u00a0<\/span>to number one on the Billboard R&B singles, where\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>stayed for three weeks. A signature\u00a0<\/span>piece<\/span> for Summer,\u00a0<\/span>she\u00a0<\/span>performed<\/span>\u00a0it to open the Grammy Awards in 1984.\u00a0<\/span>Its\u00a0<\/span>message lives through the years: \u201cShe works hard for the money\/So hard for it, honey\/She works hard for the money\/So you better treat her right.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The person portrayed in this song has \u201cso many things to do\/Oh, I got work to do\/I got work baby\/I got a job baby\/I got work to do.\u201d Perhaps his lady love feels ignored, as though his interest in her has waned. But he insists that\u2019s not true. He would \u201clove to spend more time.\u201d But he can\u2019t because \u201cI\u00a0gotta\u00a0make it for you and\u00a0gotta\u00a0make it for me.\u201d Don\u2019t fret, that\u2019s the way it\u00a0has to\u00a0be for now. \u201cSo\u00a0keep your love light\u00a0burnin\u2019\u201d and \u201cget used to me\/Coming home a little late.\u201d The\u00a0Isley\u00a0Brothers tell it like it is with a cool blend of funk, rock and soul and heavy percussion. Perfect ring tone material, this c<\/span>atchy<\/span>\u00a0tune makes a decisive point. \u201cGirl, you better get a job\/Oh girl, you need to work real hard.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>The number of\u00a0<\/span>occupational\u00a0<\/span>pursuits<\/span>\u00a0is endless\u00a0<\/span>but the need for\u00a0<\/span>one<\/span>\u00a0is critical.\u00a0<\/span>Why? L<\/span>acking gainful employment \u201cwas adorable when you were in your 20s\/Not so cute anymore now that you\u2019re pushing 30.\u201d From the album <\/span>A Joyful Noise<\/span><\/i>, this song is the creation of the singer-songwriter\u00a0<\/span>known\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>the stage name Beth Ditto. She formed the indie rock band Gossip in 1999, which recorded five studio albums, this being\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>the first<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>lyrics<\/span>\u00a0underscore the importance of work, which it conveys by repeating that word\u00a0<\/span>consecutively\u00a0<\/span>eight times. And it acknowledges that finding\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>takes grit and effort. \u201cYou\u00a0gotta\u00a0try, try, try\/I know it\u2019s hard but\/You never know, how it\u2019s\u00a0gonna\u00a0go, end up tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0something novel: a punk rock song that presents a life lesson. This English rock band advocates that,\u00a0<\/span>in con<\/span>sidering<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201ccareer opportunities,\u201d even those who are unemployed should be careful.\u00a0<\/span>Don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0jump<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>if at all possible<\/span>. Assess each\u00a0<\/span>option<\/span>. \u201cThey offered me the office, offered me the shop\/They said I\u2019d better take anything they got.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0because \u201cEvery job they offer you is to keep you out the dock.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0be pressured or shamed into saying \u201cyes.\u201d Hold out for something challenging,\u00a0<\/span>rewarding,<\/span>\u00a0and suitable. \u201c<\/span><\/b>9 to 5<\/span><\/b>\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Dolly Parton, 1985<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A\u00a0<\/span>work playlist\u00a0<\/span>must, this is a Dolly Parton standard. She wrote it, performs it and<\/span>, upon its release,<\/span>\u00a0saw it\u00a0<\/span>peak on<\/span>\u00a0three Billboard charts and receive an Oscar nomination for best song. The lyrics\u00a0<\/span>scale\u00a0<\/span>the emotional highs and lows of working, starting with \u201cI tumble\u00a0outta\u00a0bed and stumble to the kitchen\/Pour myself a cup of ambition.\u201d It transitions to the frustrations of \u201c<\/span>w<\/span>orking 9 to 5, what a way to make a living\/Barely getting by, it\u2019s all taking and no giving.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Then it<\/span>\u00a0stays downbeat: \u201cThey just use your mind, and they never give you credit\/It\u2019s enough to drive you crazy if you let it.\u201d And\u00a0<\/span>flips<\/span>\u00a0to the upside: \u201cThe tide\u2019s\u00a0gonna\u00a0turn, and it\u2019s all\u00a0gonna\u00a0roll your\u00a0<\/span>way\/Working 5 to 9, making something of your own now.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Over the years,\u00a0<\/span>this rollicking tune has become an anthem for\u00a0<\/span>workers, especially women<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s face it \u2014 at one time or another, we all wanted to walk off a job. Something or everything gets to you. Who but a country singing star by the stage name of Johnny Paycheck could wail those thoughts into a number one hit for two consecutive weeks? When you <\/span>pay close attention\u00a0<\/span>to the words, you may get the impression the man featured in this song is only contemplating this drastic action. Or is he\u00a0actually calling\u00a0it quits? \u201cI\u2019d give the shirt right\u00a0offa\u2019 my back\/If I had the guts to say\/Take this job and shove it\/I\u00a0ain\u2019t\u00a0working here no more.\u201d It\u2019s a powerful phrase, forceful, seething with resentment and memorable. It must be all that and more because it spawned a movie of the same name in 1981. Both the writer of this song and Johnny Paycheck had minor roles in that film.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/b>All Work and No Play<\/span><\/b>\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Van Morrison, 2002<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Take a break, as in \u201c<\/span>c<\/span>hill out in style.\u201d But\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>operate<\/span>\u00a0heavy machinery while in this mode.\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>y all means,\u00a0<\/span>give<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>thumping bluesy work by this Northern Irish singer-songwriter and\u00a0<\/span>instrumentalist<\/span>\u00a0a try<\/span>. It could be the pause that save<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0the poor chap in this song from \u201cgoing down the drain.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
