Our heads and hearts could benefit.\u00a0If you\u2019re going to watch something\u00a0on your TV, computer or phone\u00a0anyway, why not make it a refreshing experience with\u00a0uplifting\u00a0themes and even\u00a0rip roaring\u00a0fun? Here are 10 suggestions to take your mind off the outside world and smile.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Schitt\u2019s\u00a0Creek<\/h3>\n

\u201c<\/span>Terrible name, terrific sitcom: how Schitt\u2019s Creek became a surprise hit<\/span><\/a>.\u201d\u00a0The title of a post in\u00a0<\/span>The Guardian<\/span><\/i>\u00a0about this series says it all. Well, not all, but a lot. This Canadian TV product from the Levy boys \u2013 son Dan and father Eugene \u2013 tells the riches-to-rags story of the Rose family. The patriarch, Johnny, who once reigned over a video store empire, loses all of his money thanks to his unscrupulous business manager. Left destitute after an elaborate embezzlement scheme, the Roses find themselves without hearth and home. They relocate to\u00a0Schitt\u2019s\u00a0Creek, a rural town,\u00a0the deed to which the dad bought for his son as a gag gift\u00a0years\u00a0back. This extravagant and\u00a0avant\u00a0garde\u00a0family doesn\u2019t mesh\u00a0with the town residents, at least not initially and pretty much for the 80 episodes over six seasons. But they give it a go in their own most unusual ways. The concept for the series came from Dan Levy\u2019s musings about what life could be like if wealthy people\u00a0hit rock bottom.\u00a0Although the reception to this show was middling for the first two seasons, it hit the heights when production moved to Netflix. \u201c<\/span>The Rise of Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/span><\/a>\u201d\u00a0explains: \u201cThanks for a daffy charm \u2013 a winning combination of its characters\u2019 caustic wit and the show\u2019s fundamental warmth\u2026 the series rose from humble origins to the pinnacle of TV acclaim.\u201d\u00a0It\u00a0\u201cset a new record for most Emmy wins by a\u00a0comedy\u00a0series in a single season.\u201d Watch it on Netflix; it\u2019s also on Amazon Video and syndicated TV at times.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee<\/h3>\n

The TV program\u00a0<\/span>Seinfeld<\/span><\/i>\u00a0was supposed to be\u00a0\u201c<\/span>a show about nothing<\/span><\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>which started as a\u00a0web series, masters that theme via the directorial and hosting skills of Jerry Seinfeld himself.\u00a0The\u00a084 episodes over 11 seasons\u00a0follow the same basic formula. Seinfeld, a fan of vintage cars, selects one just right to ferry a\u00a0particular\u00a0guest to and from a caf\u00e9. They talk and talk some more in the vehicle and the restaurant. No, that\u2019s not\u00a0exactly\u00a0right. They enjoy one another\u2019s company\u00a0and engage in banter, repartee\u00a0and musings of the very funny kind. That\u2019s better. Most of the\u00a0segments\u00a0last between 12 and 20 minutes. They\u00a0move\u00a0quickly as jokes and laughter whizz by. Get ready for a star-studded line up, which includes comedy greats Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks together in one show.\u00a0There are many others, such as\u00a0Aziz Ansari,\u00a0Stephen Colbert, Larry David, Kevin Hart, Eddie Murphy, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sarah Silverman and Garry Shandling. In one of the\u00a0<\/span>top-rated installments<\/span><\/a>, Alec Baldwin \u201csteals the show and makes an appearance as Jack Nicholson.\u201d In a\u00a0mirthful\u00a0moment, Baldwin says to the host: \u201cYour life has been one unbroken boulevard of green lights, hasn\u2019t it?\u201d You\u2019ll see why\u00a0<\/span>Screenrant.com<\/span><\/a>\u00a0says: \u201cThe idea of the show that is nothing more than two people driving around and getting coffee doesn\u2019t sound like entertaining television.\u00a0However… Jerry Seinfeld\u2026\u00a0turned\u00a0<\/span>Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee<\/span><\/i>\u00a0into a truly great talk show.\u201d Suggestion: don\u2019t watch this series\u00a0on an empty stomach when\u00a0streaming\u00a0it on Netflix.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s \u201ca\u00a0<\/span>sitcom with one of the most outlandish premises<\/span><\/a>\u00a0one would ever see. Yet it manages to strike a universal chord with viewers, making almost anyone relate to the show\u2019s characters.\u201d\u00a0That\u2019s how\u00a0<\/span>TheCinemaholic<\/span><\/a>\u00a0characterizes\u00a0<\/span>Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0This series, which ran\u00a0on network TV and transitioned to\u00a0Netflix, where it is now, is about rebirth.\u00a0Why?\u00a0Kimmy and three other women were kidnapped and held captive by a doomsday cult in a town in Indiana for 15 years. These were not pleasant times for these victims. They lived in an underground\u00a0bunker,\u00a0brainwashed that an apocalypse was in the offing.\u00a0As the series starts, the authorities rescue the group. They open the doors to the bunker and the ladies emerge to see the light of day. But now what?\u00a0Do these \u201cmole women,\u201d as the media refers to them, go back to their roots and resume\u00a0their former lives? Not Kimmy. She decides to venture to New York City to start anew. There she quickly meets an eccentric landlady and\u00a0an\u00a0equally\u00a0unconventional roommate and\u00a0employer. These three form and ensemble cast that is, in a word, zany. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s a Miracle<\/span><\/a>!<\/a>\u201d is a phrase in the catchy theme song, which frames the\u00a0upbeat\u00a0nature\u00a0of the show.\u00a0<\/span>Rolling Stone\u00a0<\/span><\/i>says that this \u201c<\/span>off-kilter\u00a0comedy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0remains true to its roots as an always absurd, often poignant show that survived, like its title character, against the odds.\u201d And\u00a0TheCinemaholilc\u00a0adds that Kimmy\u2019s \u201coptimistic attitude proves to be infectious and makes the show one of the best feel-good productions of recent times.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nailed It!<\/h3>\n

This madcap streaming series has perfected the recipe for\u00a0great laughter. Recruit a\u00a0pleasant, yet pointed comic host and a world-class pastry chef who oozes easygoing charm. Add a roster of happily self-effacing amateur contestants to collaborate as daring duos and assign them\u00a0amped-up\u00a0baking projects to recreate from intricate models.\u00a0Then, after too short a time,\u00a0ask\u00a0those aspiring to win the $10,000 grand prize\u00a0to\u00a0reveal their entries.\u00a0When they do, they shout \u201cNailed It!\u201d in more than a bit of hopeful jest. Do their works resemble the masterpieces? A\u00a0hilarious\u00a0judge who knows nothing about baking,\u00a0similar to\u00a0the emcee of the show \u2013 not a clue \u2013 also weighs in on the verdict. Oh, the decision makers have to not only view the pastries, but also sample them. The winners of the first of the two challenges in every episode receive giant golden chef hats, which they wear\u00a0on air. Everyone gets along and has a blast for all 46 episodes \u2013 no sore losers here. Netflix, which airs\u00a0<\/span>Nailed It!<\/span><\/i>\u00a0describes it as: \u201c<\/span>Part reality contest, part hot mess<\/span><\/a>.\u201d By the way, the phrase \u201c<\/span>nailed it<\/span><\/a>\u201d\u00a0refers\u00a0to \u201cthe successful, skillful, or clever completion or performance of something. It\u2019s often used sarcastically in reference to efforts\u00a0that comically failed.\u201d How has this series fared? It received \u201c<\/span>critical acclaim<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, including twice for Outstanding Competition Program and once for Outstanding Host for a Reality of Competition Program.\u201d The celebrity chef took this role because other cooking shows \u201c<\/span>are too serious<\/span><\/a>.\u201d This one is not!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kim\u2019s Convenience<\/h3>\n

Warning: Beware of belly laughing!\u00a0Humorous\u00a0and\u00a0heartwarming,\u00a0<\/span>Kim\u2019s Convenience<\/span><\/i>\u00a0will\u00a0delight\u00a0you.\u00a0Every 25-minute episode opens with a brief sketch, which\u00a0pokes fun at\u00a0the incongruities of\u00a0life.\u00a0<\/span>Appa<\/span><\/i>, Korean for dad,\u00a0who\u00a0appears in all of them,\u00a0is\u00a0shrewd\u00a0most of the time and\u00a0a\u00a0pawn\u00a0for social commentary at others. He is Mr. Kim, owner of a neighborhood general store in Moss Park in Toronto. He and his wife, who their children\u00a0call\u00a0<\/span>Umma<\/span><\/i>, or mom, left their\u00a0Asian\u00a0homeland for greater opportunity in Canada.\u00a0But\u00a0this series does not focus on\u00a0the\u00a0Kims\u00a0exclusively; there\u2019s more to it.\u00a0<\/span>Vanity Fair<\/span><\/i>\u00a0on \u201c<\/span>Why Kim\u2019s Convenience Matters<\/span><\/a>,\u201d\u00a0claims\u00a0this is \u201ca show about an Asian family that isn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>just<\/span><\/i>\u00a0about an Asian family.\u201d\u00a0It tackles a cross-section of social, business and other issues in mainly a\u00a0cheerful\u00a0way.\u00a0The series\u00a0originated as a play written by a co-creator of\u00a0it, who wasn\u2019t getting acting roles at the time. He based it on his own experience, which parallels the main plot.\u00a0How do influencers regard\u00a0<\/span>Kim\u2019s Convenienc<\/span><\/i>e?\u00a0The first season, which aired on CBC TV in Canada in 2016, received \u201c<\/span>100% approval rating<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 12 critics\u2019 reviews.\u201d One called it \u201ca clever, generally engaging\u00a0screwball\u00a0comedy with an eye on entertainment.\u201d Another said \u201cthe dialogue is sharp, on point and borderline subversive,\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0added \u201cit has the potential to be a future classic. It has bite. It\u2019s funny and true, but not a reality we typically see reflected on television.\u201d Watch all five seasons on Netflix.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Doc Martin<\/h3>\n

\u201c<\/span>Make an appointment<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with the brilliant but socially awkward and neurotic Doc Martin,\u201d suggests Amazon. To that\u00a0it adds the plot line. \u201cWhen Martin develops an aversion to blood, he abandons his career as a celebrated London surgeon and becomes the only doctor in a sleepy small town where his tactless manner soon has the whole town in an uproar.\u201d\u00a0This\u00a0description covers some of the bases; but\u00a0It\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0cite\u00a0the strong\u00a0comedic\u00a0pull of the series, which stems from the doc himself and the villagers. This brilliant medical practitioner has no filter. He tells his patients \u2013 and everyone for that matter \u2013\u00a0exactly\u00a0what he thinks. Gasp! It\u2019s shocking,\u00a0refreshing\u00a0and a source of wonderment and perhaps envy. As for the denizens of Port Wenn, they have\u00a0eccentricities in the nicest and most\u00a0amusing\u00a0of ways. Put it together and it\u2019s an Rx for a streaming experience that is sure to capture your attention and\u00a0likely\u00a0your\u00a0devotion. What\u2019s more, you may even learn something about medicine and maladies in\u00a0the process.<\/span>\u00a0Doc Martin<\/span><\/i>\u00a0aired originally on British TV before being picked up by Public Broadcasting in the U.S.\u00a0<\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/i>\u00a0celebrated its arrival in a post on \u201c<\/span>Small-Town Crank Finds His Following<\/span><\/a>\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0refers to it as a \u201cfish-out-of-water comedy.\u201d A post on \u201c<\/span>3 Reasons Why We Love Doc Martin<\/span><\/a>\u201d\u00a0sites\u00a0countless\u00a0ways\u00a0but highlights: \u201che\u2019s socially awkward; despite his lack of warmth, he\u2019s always honest; the good doctor does have a soft-spot.\u201d So will you for this series. Watch it on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Acorn.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel<\/h3>\n

In real life, aspiring comics hang out on the stand-up\u00a0circuit\u00a0for years\u00a0until\u00a0\u2013 or,\u00a0more likely,\u00a0if \u2013 they\u00a0make\u00a0it. In this series, the lead character\u00a0Midge Maisel, who starts out as a\u00a0housewife,\u00a0performs\u00a0a spontaneous set\u00a0on stage in a drunken state after her husband leaves her. He, by the way, is the one who desires\u00a0a career in comedy. And she, by the way, is good. Make that\u00a0\u201cmarvelous.\u201d\u00a0Oh, that\u2019s just the beginning of\u00a0this\u00a0witty\u00a0series, which provides\u00a0a cultural tour\u00a0of the 1950\u2019s\/\u201960\u2019s, complete with\u00a0couture\u00a0galore. Other\u00a0regulars in the cast form a tightly knit ensemble of the most\u00a0sidesplitting\u00a0type, e.g., Midge\u2019s\u00a0theatrical\u00a0agent and Midge\u2019s dad.\u00a0The creator of the series, Amy Sherman-Palladino, is known for her \u201c<\/span>caffeine-powered dialogue<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s laced with pop culture references\u00a0aplenty.\u201d\u00a0Her father, by the way, did stand-up initially in New York City. All of this comes through clearly and\u00a0happily\u00a0in this \u201ceffervescent comedy.\u201d The pilot episode, which aired in 2017 on Amazon Video, was one of\u00a0its\u00a0most successful ever; the average viewer rating achieved\u00a0<\/span>4.9 on a 5-point<\/span><\/a>\u00a0scale.\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>A.V. Club<\/span><\/a>\u00a0ranked the production design as \u201coutstanding\u201d and noted: \u201cthis is a series that\u2019s as confident as its heroine \u2013 and what a heroine she is.\u201d In its three seasons \u2013\u00a0with\u00a0one more in the works — the series won award upon award. Examples include Golden Globe for Best Television Series \u2013 Musical or Comedy and Emmys for directing, writing, lead actress, supporting actress and actor \u2013 just about everything. Cobra Kai<\/h3>\n

Remember\u00a0<\/span>The Karate Kid<\/span><\/i>\u00a0movie? It\u2019s back in the form of this comedy-drama series.\u00a0It features the same main characters and those who portrayed\u00a0them \u2013 Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence. Only it\u2019s 34 years later and they have gone onto other pursuits,\u00a0well at least one\u00a0has successfully. Both have\u00a0not forgotten the fateful\u00a0All-Valley Karate Tournament\u00a0playoffs; their\u00a0bitter\u00a0rivalry festers and continues to\u00a0sear.\u00a0Oh, it\u2019s intense\u00a0and\u00a0a test of good against evil. Karate proves to be\u00a0a path for\u00a0underdogs to pursue to find their inner strength,\u00a0protection\u00a0against bullying,\u00a0friends and especially\u00a0babes. It\u2019s\u00a0all\u00a0reminiscent of\u00a0the\u00a0Rocky Balboa saga\u00a0and\u00a0entertaining\u00a0to the hilt. \u201c\u2019Cobra Kai\u2019 is not good, but\u00a0<\/span>it is awesome<\/span><\/a>,\u201d declares\u00a0<\/span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/i>. What\u2019s the appeal? This piece cites \u201csolid retconning and generational satire.\u201d Retconning is short for \u201c<\/span>retroactive continuity<\/span><\/a>.\u201d That refers to picking up from where a fictional work left off with enough creative freedom to make it work. The latter \u2013 satire \u2013 is superb.\u00a0\u201cThe premise is good, but the show\u2019s humor is better.\u201d The main characters are middle age and\u00a0often lack\u00a0the savvy to\u00a0immediately\u00a0pick up\u00a0cultural cues and changes. This comes across in how they relate to teenagers, to the world at large and definitely to each other. If you grew up in the 1980\u2019s or admire the music from that era, this series is for you, but not limited to you\u00a0alone. It launched on YouTube in 2018 and has moved to Netflix. It\u2019s sure to move you too!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Good Place<\/h3>\n

\u201c<\/span>If you like your sitcoms surreal, thought-provoking and generally warm<\/span>, this one\u2019s for you.\u201d That\u2019s the word from\u00a0<\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/i>\u00a0in its post\u00a0entitled\u00a0\u201c<\/span>Comforting Streaming TV Shows for Stressful Times<\/span><\/a>.\u201d\u00a0The\u00a0series\u00a0revolves around\u00a0an engaging\u00a0main character and\u00a0her\u00a0cohorts. The woman in the starring\u00a0role\u00a0finds herself in an unlikely predicament\u00a0with a\u00a0curious\u00a0outcome. After living a life of mixed behaviors, this recently-deceased person has been sent to \u201cthe good place\u201d rather than the bad one. However,\u00a0her destination\u00a0is\u00a0supposed to be\u00a0for those on the highest end of the ethical scale. It\u2019s a utopian-like environment, idyllic and the best after-life alternative versus the underworld.\u00a0How did this mistake happen? Or did it? What\u2019s the\u00a0point? What should she do? Are\u00a0others\u00a0there like her too? And how can she \u2013 and they \u2013 stay true to the principles of The Good Place, such as not using profanity and\u00a0adhering to\u00a0other saintly rules?\u00a0Each resident has a soulmate assigned, so it\u2019s not as easy as it seems to toe the line.\u00a0There\u2019s plenty of banter and good\u00a0versus\u00a0evil jokes, such as \u201c<\/span>If you\u2019re a devil,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0how come you\u2019re not wearing Prada?\u201d\u00a0As the plot evolves, the characters are\u00a0kept off balance\u00a0and viewers are too, over the course of the series\u2019 four-year run of 53 episodes. It\u2019s\u00a0fun\u00a0and absorbing.\u00a0The show received \u201c<\/span>critical acclaim<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for its writing, acting, originality, setting and tone.\u201d It ran on network TV from 2016 to 2020. It\u2019s now a\u00a0Netflix\u00a0property, where you can watch it in its entirety.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Atypical<\/h3>\n

This series is\u00a0<\/span>among \u201cThe best 9 under-the-radar sitcoms<\/span><\/a>\u00a0you can stream on Netflix right now.\u201d It\u2019s unlikely and truly\u00a0atypical. Why? The\u00a0plot\u00a0revolves around an\u00a018-year old\u00a0boy\u00a0from Connecticut, who is\u00a0on the autism spectrum. Make no mistake about it \u2013 it is\u00a0a comedy, an\u00a0endearing\u00a0one at that.\u00a0Here\u2019s what the same Insider post\u00a0said about\u00a0<\/span>Atypical<\/span><\/i>: \u201cTold with heart, it\u2019s an elongated coming of age story, and moreover, it\u2019s downright hilarious.\u201d\u00a0The comedic touches span the gamut, from\u00a0outright\u00a0clowning to dark humor; this continuum\u00a0is emblematic of the tenor of the entire show. Sam, the subject of\u00a0<\/span>Atypical<\/span><\/i>, longs to be typical in\u00a0many ways. At the beginning of the show\u2019s four-season run\u00a0in 2017, he wants to\u00a0get\u00a0a girlfriend.\u00a0He\u00a0strives to achieve his wish list\u00a0with the help of a therapist, who counsels him on deciphering social cues and bridging how to interact and communicate effectively with others.\u00a0As the series unfolds, so too do his goals, such as attending college and moving out of his parents\u2019 home. As for the parents and other members of the family, the series delves into how\u00a0autism affects all of them. They are lovingly supportive but coping with their own battles.\u00a0<\/span>TV Guide<\/span><\/i>\u00a0proclaimed: \u201c<\/span>Atypical Remains the Most Surprising Family Comedy on TV<\/span><\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s more than likely you will agree with that statement.
