At the time of this writing, it has been ricocheting at organizations across the country.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Forbes<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0calls this job exodus the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinesscouncil\/2021\/08\/13\/the-great-resignation-an-opportunity-to-rethink-employee-empowerment\/?sh=7f670c862e19\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Great Resignation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u201d Based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, \u201cMore people quit their jobs in April 2021 than in any single month in nearly a century. After a challenging and disorienting year, many people are looking for a change.\u201d In\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/06\/quitting-your-job-economic-optimism\/619242\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">terms of numbers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, more than 700,000 workers in professional and business services left. And in the hospitality and retail sector, for every 100 workers, about five of them left their job.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Although this exodus\u00a0en\u00a0masse is highly disruptive, the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Forbes<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0piece says that \u201ca certain amount of turnover works for companies and their employees.\u201d At any time, one, several, or more employees are bound to leave. If it hasn\u2019t happened already, it will. \u201cFor leaders, there are two ways to respond,\u201d this post suggests. \u201cYou can become bitter and defensive\u00a0\u2014\u00a0many will undoubtedly follow this path\u00a0\u2014\u00a0or you can celebrate people holistically, knowing they are better off when they pursue their passions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The first option, which amounts to \u201coutrage,\u201d is, in\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Forbes\u2019<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0words, \u201cold-fashioned.\u201d Instead of viewing the situation sourly, reframe the perspective. Be upbeat. There\u2019s a chance now to hire another person who presents a great fit. As\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yoh.com\/blog\/7-effective-ways-to-handle-employee-resignations\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yoh<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0advises: \u201cIn the end, if you already lost them, there is no need to make a scene out of it. They will probably respect you less if you do that, and losing their respect is not something you want at this point.\u201d Hear what the employee has to say. A friendly, yet measured approach will bolster the departing person\u2019s cooperation. It doesn\u2019t have to be uptight or devoid of emotion. Cite the person\u2019s strong points and accomplishments. Congratulate. Express your regrets for losing this person and keep the door open to return. Agree to provide references, if asked to do so now or in the future. Then set guidelines. Ask for a formal resignation letter with key dates, if it has not been submitted. You have a lot to do in the days between the employee resigning and walking out the door permanently. Ask the person to put everything he or she does in order before leaving, e.g., meticulous notes about activities, immediate needs that will have to be met in the person\u2019s absence, where critical things are, names and numbers of importance. Ask the said employee to create a binder for this. People in the department and those\u00a0at\u00a0the organization who come in business contact with that person should hear about it in a timely manner through proper channels. Hold a brief team meeting about this, including potential plans, handoffs, sendoffs, and critical issues to maintain the flow of work. Keep messaging consistent and to the point. Act swiftly before rumors set in. Plan a send-off for the departing employee. It doesn\u2019t have to be elaborate; small and simple, if done right, accomplishes the purpose. And that is to provide a warm farewell as well as show those on the team this is a fine place to work with a caring culture. Say a few words in the context of the communications that have circulated. Invite participants to do the same and give the floor to the departing employee to say goodbye. Basically: How do you pick up the slack? Enumerate the ways. Develop this guide according to job descriptions or whatever way makes most sense. Update it periodically. Include all members of the team (that means you, too).
