Not if I want the job. <\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, what the heck am I supposed to say?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If your internal dialogue sounds like this from time to time, you&#8217;re in good company. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\ud83d\udc4b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I get tripped up on interview questions, too. Some questions seem like a trap, while others are just bizarrely quizzing me on my knowledge of the animal kingdom. Seriously, why?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">6 dreaded interview questions<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the nearly 3,000 votes on our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/creative-circle_love-or-hate-it-most-jobs-in-todays-job-activity-7248028629094281216-uMOz?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">recent LinkedIn poll<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and the buzzing comments section, there are six common questions that trip up interviewees the most: <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tell us about yourself!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why should we hire you?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is your greatest weakness?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What are your salary requirements?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tell us about a time you failed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you were an animal, what would you be?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why hiring managers are asking<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Did you know there are over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.linkedin.com\/about-us#Statistics\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">9,000 job applications per minute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on the LinkedIn platform alone? And only about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apollotechnical.com\/33-essential-job-interview-statistics-every-applicant-should-know\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">8% of applicants make it to the interview scheduling stage?<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s a lot of applicants for one job, and likely a lot of people that can do the basic day-to-day functions of that job. Skills- and competency-based questions aside, these behavioral questions can help hiring managers (in their mind at least) assess things like a candidate\u2019s communication style, how they respond to challenges, and how they\u2019ll fit in with the team.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tackling the dreaded question<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To better understand how to answer these behavioral questions, I leaned on two experts from our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/contact-us\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chicago office<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Creative Circle recruiters <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mary Blackburn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rose-boyer-34606b43\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rose Boyer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> break down each interview question below \u2014 what do hiring managers really mean when they ask these questions? And how should you respond?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTell us about yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-59020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-5.png 600w, https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-5-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is usually an icebreaker question, right at the start of your interview. It is not the time to share details of your personal life, and your response should be relatively brief. Think of it like an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/articles\/elevator-pitch?msockid=32e8aa4fd4f0613c0006b98ed57260d0\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">elevator pitch<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and keep it professional <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014 the hiring manager wants to know a bit about who you are, what you do, and why you\u2019re interested in the position you\u2019re interviewing for.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rose says, \u201cSome candidates make the mistake of starting off by sharing where they live<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2014 that&#8217;s not what we\u2019re asking.\u201d She adds, \u201cI\u2019ve had candidates begin by sharing their age. We don\u2019t need to know that either.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mary adds to Rose\u2019s sentiment, \u201cTry to avoid the year-by-year play. It\u2019s fine to include where you started but let that be a brief bullet in your overall response. We can see previous employers and duration of employment on your resume, so it\u2019s not necessary to spell that all out for this question.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhy should we hire you?\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-59019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-4.png 525w, https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-4-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interviewers are looking for a specific and personalized response that showcases how you can solve their business needs; be sure to emphasize your most relevant experiences. This is an opportunity to show that you\u2019ve researched this company, that you understand what they need, and that you can deliver.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rose suggests explaining why you\u2019re a great fit for the role you&#8217;re interviewing for specifically, and to refer back to some of the discussions you\u2019ve had throughout the interview. You might say, \u201cYou mentioned earlier that time management is essential to this role \u2014 time management is one of my biggest strengths. I use a project management tool to stay on top of deadlines, prioritize, and plan my tasks and it works tremendously. \u00a0It helps keep my manager in the loop on project status, too.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mary says, \u201cMake yourself stand out from the crowd. What skills and experience do you have that might separate you from the other applicants?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat is your greatest weakness?\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-59025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"443\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-6.png 625w, https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-6-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If a hiring manager asks you this question, they\u2019re probably checking to see how self-aware you are. They want you to expand on your weaknesses with a couple details on how you\u2019re managing them. Saying that you\u2019re a \u201cperfectionist\u201d isn\u2019t going to cut it <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014 be sincere, not clich\u00e9.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rose and Mary both agree that they personally hate this question and prefer not to ask it in interviews. However, to save yourself from any unnecessary surprises, they do suggest having an answer prepped just in case. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mary says, \u201cBe mindful of which weakness you decide to share. If the job description says you need to learn a new CRM, don\u2019t share that you struggle learning new CRMs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As an example, Rose shares what a response to this question might look like for her: \u201cSometimes, I have a hard time processing information that I hear. I combat this by asking for an email communication instead, or I\u2019ll follow up via email so I can have things in writing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;What are your salary requirements?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> &#8220;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-59026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-7.png 450w, https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-7-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thanks to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/finance\/pay-transparency-laws?msockid=32e8aa4fd4f0613c0006b98ed57260d0\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">pay transparency laws<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> developing in several states now, the salary requirements conversation has become more transparent. If you know the range an employer is willing to pay for a job, then you know how much you can expect to earn.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re interviewing for a job with the pay range listed, Mary advises against requiring the top of the range from the jump. \u201cIt could jeopardize your opportunity for a role, especially if there are other candidates interviewing with similar experience to yours and a salary expectation closer to the middle or middle-upper end of the range,\u201d Mary says. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pay transparency or not, Rose says, \u201cCandidates should never be dead set on a specific number. Always let the hiring manager know that you\u2019re targeting between two numbers. This shows that you\u2019re open to negotiation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mary lives by the rule of 5s. If you\u2019re sharing expectations for an hourly rate, keep the range within $5. If it\u2019s a salaried position, try to stick to a range at or close to $5k. In her experience, increments of 5 provide a fair opportunity for both the candidate and the client to meet somewhere in the middle.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTell us about a time you failed.\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-59028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-9.png 500w, https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-9-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Everyone experiences failure at one time or another <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014 this question isn&#8217;t really about the failure itself, it\u2019s about how you worked through it. \u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re trying to understand your process,\u201d says Rose. With this response, you have the opportunity to show a hiring manager how you take feedback and how you grow. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Consider sharing these details with the interviewer:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">How did you identify your failure and how did you react to it?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">What steps did you take to rectify the situation?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Did you communicate your mistakes appropriately?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">And what are you doing to avoid it in the future?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mary suggests keeping a response to this question in your back pocket.\u00a0 \u201cTalking about failure isn\u2019t easy. Think through your scenario in advance and rehearse it so you\u2019re not stumbling through the details mid-interview.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf you were an animal, what animal would you be?\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-59027\" src=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-8.png 575w, https:\/\/www.creativecircle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WordPress-Blog-Images-8-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is just an awkward way of seeing if you\u2019ll be a good cultural fit for the company. Rose and Mary both agree that this question is silly and advise not to get too caught up on which animal you select. \u201cIf you can connect a few of your key personality traits to an animal that you have some knowledge about, that\u2019s all you need.\u201d says Rose.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s worth noting that this question could be an opportunity to stand out as memorable and creative, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if you want to.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> You could choose an interesting animal; instead of a dog, you could try a dolphin, eagle, or honeybee. Just make sure you can connect some of their standout traits back to your personal interests and qualities. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As with all the other questions, keep this one in your back pocket too.
